Stop the Shine: How an Oil Control Face Gel Keeps Breakouts at Bay

Control Face Gel

An oily skin may often appear excessively shiny which is troubling for several people. The T-zone of the face may appear more shiny and oily than the rest of the face because of more prominent pores in this region. This is a never-ending problem for some people.

Oily skin is accompanied by clogged pores, blackheads, pimples and what not. There are many temporary solutions for clearing shine that last a few hours or so. What you actually require is a skincare product that removes excess oil from within and clears pores.

An oil control acne gel is meant for the same purpose. It does not just remove the shine from the face but works by controlling oil from within and it also helps in providing sufficient hydration to the face without leaving a heavy feel behind. It helps in supporting skin barrier function, reducing chances of breakouts and maintaining natural moisture.

How are breakouts and oil secretion related?

Skin produces sebum or oil through glands present in the skin called sebaceous glands. They produce sebum to maintain the skin moisture and act as a barrier protectant but its overdrive causes acne when it gets mixed with dead skin cells and dirt and clog pores.

Clogged pores create an environment where an acne causing bacteria can thrive easily and multiply which can cause inflammation and pimples on the skin. There are several factors that contribute to excess sebum and acne:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Diet
  • Stress
  • Genetics
  • Environmental changes
  • Pollution
  • Heavy ingredients based skincare and makeup

Why does drying out the skin not help?

Oily skin people also need moisturizer. It is a misconception that they don’t.  Drying out the skin completely won’t help at all. Skipping hydration at all will make the skin dry and tight. It would strip the natural oil balance from the face leading to even more oil production. This forms an irritating cycle.

  • Harsh cleansing leads to loss of natural skin moisture balance
  • The skin gets dehydrated
  • Sebaceous glands start secreting more oil in result
  • Dirt and dead skin cells get mixed with sebum
  • Pores get clogged
  • Acne breakouts occur

How does a clear skin gel help?

Regular creams are heavy in texture due to oil and emollient rich content. They are great for providing moisture but often feel heavy and greasy so they are not so suitable.

On the other hand gel formulations are lightweight in texture and have a non greasy approach. They have a targeted delivery of action.

  • Lightweight and non-sticky: Gel based formulations are light textured and do not feel greasy on the skin after application which helps a lot for oily skin types as lightweight products do not make skin feel sticky and oily after use.
  • Easy absorption: Because of gel based formulation active ingredients get absorbed quickly into the skin and deliver action better than other formulations.
  • Easy application: Gel based formulations are easier to use as they are lightweight and are easy to incorporate into daily skincare with comfort especially for oily skin.
  • Reduces oily shine: Oily skin types have an indifferent shine on their face. A gel helps in reducing sebum by clearing it out and gives skin a normal texture.
  • Improves skin texture: It helps in improving the rough and bumpy texture of skin which occurs to clogged pores. When pores get cleared the texture might start coming back to normal.

Ingredients that are useful in clear skin gel

  • Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is a wonderful exfoliant. This little molecule is oil soluble. It can dive deep into the sebaceous glands/pores of the skin. It clears off the excess sebum from the pores and also loosens the dead skin cell bonds making an easy exit for them. This BHA helps a lot in acne and oil control.
  • Niacinamide: It helps in clearing oil from the surface because of its cleansing action as it is an AHA. It is a great ingredient for protecting skin barrier function which helps in controlling further oil secretion. It helps in clearing out pores at the surface which reduces chances of breakouts.
  • Contacticel: It is a dermo-purifying agent which is derived from red algae.  Its major function is to control sebum production by acting on the hyperactive sebaceous glands and reducing its secretions. It deals with oily skin concerns which leads to clogged pores and acne.
  • Tea tree oil: It is a plant derived alternative. Which can be used instead for harsh chemicals. It contains terpenes that can break down cellular walls of acne causing bacteria which reduces infection. It works well for inflamed pimples.

How to use gel for oil control?

  • Firstly wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
  • Then pat dry.
  • Apply gel on targeted acne prone areas using your fingers. Take small amounts only.
  • Let the gel get absorbed into your skin.
  • If required apply a lightweight moisturizer and while going out apply sunscreen always.

You can use the salicylic acid gel in both AM and PM routines. It just matters how you use it. At night don’t wear any more skincare products, just gel and night cream if required.

Final thoughts

Shine is linked with oily skin. But it does not mean you have to dry out the skin completely in order to achieve a clear skin. We all know that oily skin is more prone to acne.

If dry it out completely then acne can increase because sebum secretion increases as a barrier protectant function. A gel for clear skin can be quite useful in acne control if it clears out the excess oil from the skin. It can serve both purposes.
